Toyama creates art by melting and spraying metal and experimenting with original casting techniques to reconstruct forms. Though made of an inorganic material, his works possess organic lifelike qualities. Toyama likens these transformations in metal to natural cycles of life and energy, like the ocean turning into rain and living creatures returning to dust when they die. While prioritizing form, Toyama pursues new expressions in metal that use diverse materials, including steel, aluminum, copper, and gold. He leverages each material’s unique properties to produce works with never-before-seen textures in metal. The thin, fragile surfaces of his metalware are another highlight of his artistry.
