The human form is a universal and timeless subject that has fascinated artists throughout history. Iwamura continues to explore this theme from a contemporary perspective. His sculpted figures have distorted and abbreviated appearances reminiscent of manga and anime characters but also echoing the rough prehistoric forms seen in neolithic clay figurines (dogu) and ritual objects. They have similar proportions to archeological artifacts in museums; however, Iwamura’s sculptures typically have large heads, or are simply heads alone, but some include limbs and torsos. His work is easily approachable, utilizing a vibrant palette of blues, yellows, and oranges. Though primarily a ceramic artist, Iwamura works in a wide range of disciplines, including metal sculpture, painting and design.
