Ishiwata art is produced using weaving techniques that reflect a keen awareness of the weave structures inherent in all woven fabrics. She begins each piece by twisting yarns together and dyeing them with natural clay dye. Her works are intentionally woven in ways that render their weave structures visible, making use of threads that vary in texture and thickness from 0.5 millimeter to 1 centimeter. Ishiwata describes her art as pursuing expressions of primal beauty that existed before the advent of civilization. The title of her work Tabula Rasa is Latin for “blank slate,” referring to a state before consciousness and the mind arise, devoid of any preconceptions. Towering over the viewer, the gigantic woven mass emanates a mysterious life force, as if inviting visitors to confront the unknown.
